Friday Cult Classics: Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Every Friday night this summer, the library will be showing a cult classic film. This week’s selection is Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Rated PG-13). Buffy is an air-head cheerleader who is chosen by a guy named Merrick to fend the world of Vampires. When Merrick first informs Buffy that she is the "chosen one," she thinks he's crazy, but then strange things begin to happen. First, Buffy's friend Cassandra and many other kids form her school turn up missing and are later found "dead" with bite marks on their necks. After many other strange occurrences, Buffy then realizes that those bite marks were made by vampires. Refreshments will be provided and those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult to attend Rated R movies. All movies start at 7:00 p.m. and doors open at 6:30 p.m. This is an afterhours program.

This course is designed to be a very basic introduction to the Internet, and the software used to negotiate the Internet, specifically Internet Explorer. Students should leave this course with the ability to log onto the Internet, get to specific websites, and negotiate inside and across websites. Prerequisite: Computer Basics or some previous computer experience. Seating limited, sign-up required.
Fight Foreclosure One-on-One Counseling Session

Homeowners can schedule a private, 30 minute, one-on-one meeting with a foreclosure counselor from the Wayne County Fight Mortgage Foreclosure Program. Call or stop by the library to schedule your appointment. 734-326-6123 Space is limited. The Mortgage Foreclosure Prevention Program is a no fee, Wayne County program providing you an expansive network of certified counselors who will help you avoid or manage a mortgage foreclosure.

They invite all Westland residents to join them in the Faust Area -- where you can express your concerns about issues that matter most to you. Adult Book Discussion Group

Join us as we discuss People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks. In 1996, Hanna Heath, an Australian rare-book expert, is offered the job of a lifetime: analysis and conservation of the famed Sarajevo Haggadah, which has been rescued from during the Bosnian war. Priceless and beautiful, the book is one of the earliest Jewish volumes ever to be illuminated with images. When Hanna discovers a series of tiny artifacts in its ancient binding, she begins to unlock the book's mysteries. Hanna's investigation unexpectedly plunges her into the intrigues of fine art forgers and ultra-nationalist fanatics. Copies will be available at the Reference Desk. All are welcome.

DOCUMENTARY: Trouble the Water

Join us for a viewing of the documentary film Trouble the Water. On the day before Hurricane Katrina--just blocks away from the French Quarter but far from the New Orleans that most tourists knew--Kimberly Rivers Roberts, an aspiring rap artist, turns her new video camera on herself and her 9th Ward neighbors trapped in the city. As the hurricane begins to rage and the floodwaters fill their world and the screen, Kim and her husband Scott continue to film their harrowing retreat to higher ground and the dramatic rescues of friends and neighbors. The couple returns to the devastation of their neighborhood in New Orleans, only to be met by the appalling repeated failures of the government. Refreshments will be provided.

Summer Concert Series: Andy John and Mark Jewett

Join us for our last concert of the summer, as Open Mic regulars stop by to take the stage. Andy John first got into music when he heard Elvis sing "Good Rockin' Tonight" and plays rockabilly and folk-rock. Mark Jewett has been studying at the hands of local folk masters for years and is sure to offer an upbeat show. Limited seating provided.

Ex-con Hi and ex-cop Ed meet, marry and long for a child in the wilds of Arizona. When Ed discovers she's barren the God-given solution is presented: to snatch a baby from a set of quintuplets. Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Final Tournament!

Play Super Smash Bros. Brawl and compete in our first-ever Wii video game tournament. Warm up with open play from 3:30-4:00, when the tournament begins. Participants must be signed in by 4:00, or you won't be able to play!
Bring your own controller if you can't win without it!
This is the last tournament of the summer. All results from previous tournaments will be compiled, and prizes will be awarded!

Science Fiction/Fantasy Book Club

Join us for a discussion of Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith's Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. In what’s described as an “expanded edition” of Pride and Prejudice, 85 percent of the original text has been preserved but fused with “ultraviolent zombie mayhem.” For more than 50 years, we learn, England has been overrun by zombies, prompting people like the Bennets to send their daughters away to China for training in the art of deadly combat, and prompting others, like Lady Catherine de Bourgh, to employ armies of ninjas. Added to the familiar plot turns that bring Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy together is the fact that both are highly skilled killers, gleefully slaying zombies on the way to their happy ending. Copies will be available a month before at the Reference desk.
