Marilyn Kwik
Employee of the Year 2011

The staff of the Westland Library would like to congratulate Marilyn Kwik for being awarded Employee of the Year for 2011. Marilyn is our Head of Adult Services and she has been with the library for over 6 years. In the past year Marilyn took on the role of Interim Director while also running two departments. She continually builds community within Westland by constantly striving to add new and interesting programming to the library's offerings. When she is at the Reference Desk, Marilyn will not hesitate to put the extra effort in to really help patrons find what they are looking for. Her tireless dedication to great customer service and incredible library programming really shine through in everything she does.

Reference Librarian Andy Schuck also received recognition with an Honorable Mention for this year as well.

Teen BollyFit Class

Learn Bollywood dance, a popular form of dance seen in films from India. An instructor from BollyFit in Ann Arbor, MI, will be here this Saturday, February 4th, at 1pm to teach us how to dance Bollywood-style. Sign up on the Teen Page or by calling the library at 734-326-6123. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes because this class is a workout! Ages 12-18 only please.

Free Income Tax Help

For those who qualify, the Michigan EIC is willing to help you with your taxes. They can help those who want to e-file or who need face-to-face Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. Just visit their website, for more information. The Reference Desk will also have a paper copy of the free sites in Wayne County.

Michigan Humanities Council needs your help!

The Michigan Humanities Council is an organization that provides financial support for arts and humanities programs throughout the state of Michigan. The Westland Public Library has been the recipient of numerous grants from the council for humanities-based programs like The History of Idlewild and music events from performers like the Gratitude Steel Band. Now, because funding has been slashed, the council is asking for donations so they can continue to offer their generous support- and we can continue to host such great programs. So if you can spare something, go to: MHC donation. We thank you (and so do people throughout Michigan).

Thinking about getting an eReader? Now's the time! We are excited to announce that we are now a part of OverDrive's  Download Destination, which is a digital collection of eBooks, audiobooks and music that you can "check-out" and download like any other item in the library collection.  You must be a Westland resident to use this service and with digital downloads there are never any fines!  Find out more about how it works.

Library Closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The library will be closed Monday, January 16, 2012 for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.  We will re-open Tuesday, January 17 at 9 am.

"One Out of Five People Can't Read This" poster
Adult Literacy Tutor Information Night

Make a difference! Teach someone to read. In the United States there are 30 million adults who can’t read at a functional level and there are currently over 100,000 adults on waitlists to get paired with a literacy tutor at this time.  Find out how you can get involved and share your love of reading with an adult in need at our Adult Literacy Tutor Info Night on Thursday, January 26th at 7pm!   We will go over how tutor training works (15 hours on March 3rd, 10th and 17th from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm) and what’s necessary to become a tutor—just 2 hours a week. No formal training in education is required and you don't have to make any commitments right away. Just stop by and find out what adult literacy is all about! If you are unable to attend and are still interested, please give us a call or stop by the Reference desk and ask for Kristy.

Give Life - Red Cross Blood Drive on December 29th!

We will be hosting a blood drive all day in meeting rooms A and B. Make an appointment by stopping by or calling the Reference desk, calling 1-800-GIVELIFE, or visiting redcross.org and using the donor code WPLCCP. Drop-in dononations will also be accepted, though donors with appointments will be given priority.

Holiday Hours

The library will be closed Saturday, December 24 through Monday, December 26 for the Christmas holiday.  Also, we will be closed Saturday, December 31 and Sunday, January 1 for New Year's.
