Food for Fines - 1 week to go

One week to go for this year's Food for Fines program! Last year, the Westland Public Library donated more food to Gleaners than any other TLN library. Help us beat last year's total of 1,059 food items with your non-perishable food donation (If you have fines, see below to learn about receiving fine forgiveness). Right now, we are at 725 items ... and counting. Help us help others- and also yourself!

Food for Fines April 1-30

Donate food in April to help children, families, and seniors in need. Items donated will go to Gleaners Community Food Bank (GCFB) to be distributed to seniors as well as family and women's shelters in southeastern Michigan.

1 item = $2.00 reduction in fines, maximum $20.00. Please note that fines cannot be reduced for lost or damaged items.

Non-fine related donations accepted at all service desks, Biggby Coffee (37644 Ford Rd., west of Newburgh Rd.), and the Westland Friendship Center.

Internet Security Advisory

A serious bug known as “Heartbleed” was found April 8, 2014. The bug affects OpenSSL, which is used to secure your personal data that is transmitted over the internet. The bug affects a huge chunk of the internet’s secure traffic.

It is recommended that you change your passwords for any secure services, including your email. Be wary when you transmit credit card or banking information online -- check the news section of the website to see if it mentions updates to security following the discovery of Heartbleed.

Soar and Explore with Michigan Activity Pass (MAP)!

It's been a long winter, but spring is finally here and the time is right to get out and explore one or more of the cultural attractions Michigan has to offer. Not sure where to go? ACA Navigators

Meet with a Health Care Navigator from Community Bridges for help filling out your Healthy Michigan Plan/Medicaid application or your Health Care Marketplace Application. Navigators will be here Tuesday evenings in April and May, from 6:00-8:00 pm. 

You will need to schedule an appointment beforehand. See the Reference Desk or call (734) 326-6123 to schedule an appointment.


*Please keep in mind that some appointments can last longer than others, so you might be seen later than your scheduled appointment time.

Free ESL Classes

If English isn't your first language and you'd like to practice, attend our in-person ESL (English as a Second Language) classes. Get help practicing your English skills in a classroom setting with a conversation emphasis. Classes are taught by Diane and Richard Goers.

If you missed registration day, don't worry! Come to class on Friday and get signed up. The ESL classes will be held on Fridays from February 28 through April 25 at 9:30 am — 11:15 am. Please note: there will be NO childcare offered this semester.
