The History of Hudson's Department Store

In its heyday, the Hudson's Department Store in downtown Detroit was one of the premier stores in America. Its displays and holiday events were legendary, and a visit there was an exciting shopping experience.

This Thursday, July 30th, at 7pm, join Mike Hauser, author of two books on the history of Hudson's, as he relates the story of this Grand Dame of Detroit. Mike brings photos, advertisements, uniforms and many other Hudson items with him. All are welcome to attend this fascinating, historical program.

Red Cross Blood Drive

The American Red Cross will be holding a blood drive at the library on Monday, August 17, 2015 from 11 am-5 pm. All interested donors may sign up by registering at the American Red Cross website: redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code: wplccp or call 800-RED-CROSS. You can also call the library (734-326-6123) and ask for Susan to register. Anyone over 17 (16 with a permission slip) can donate blood.

Summer Fun

Wednesday, July 22 is Hammock Day, a day to kick back and relax. Summer can go by in the blink of any eye so use this day as a reminder to take it easy and enjoy the outdoors! Celebrate Hammock Day by visiting one of the state parks that are part of the Michigan Activity Pass (MAP) Program!

Another great way to spend a summer day is a visit to the Detroit Zoo. Library patrons can now purchase discounted tickets!

Sherlock Holmes in TV and Film

Are you a Sherlock Holmes fan? This coming Tuesday, July 21st at 7 pm, Regina Stinson, founder of the Ribston-Pippins and a Sherlock Holmes enthusiast, will investigate Sherlock Holmes' depictions in film and television. She'll look at BBC's Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, as well as CBS's Elementary and many others. All are welcome.

Author Visit This Thursday, July 16

Please join us this Thursday, July 16 at 7:00 p.m. in Meeting Room B for a talk by Elaine Pereira, author of I Will Never Forget, the touching memoir of her mother's incredible journey through dementia. Anyone who has ever cared for a parent or loved one with dementia will appreciate Ms. Pereira's story from the perspective of not only a daughter and caregiver, but an occupational therapist as well. If you are currently acting as a caregiver, her story will help you know that you are not alone.
